“Like a piece of ice
on a hot stove, the
poem must ride
on its own melting.”
~Robert Frost
I confess that I have gone overboard in selecting today’s words. After completing the list, I began to fear no one would attempt a poem because the words might be too difficult to work with. So I made a second list. Feel free to use either list, mix and match, use all 20, write one poem or five, post today or anytime this week, and/or link to an older poem.
The only criterion for linking is to use at least one of the words listed below. (It is also fine to alter words as necessary, changing tenses, parts of speech, etc.)
List 1
1. timbre
2. de rigueur
3. percolate
4. marsh
5. char
6. damp
7. frail
8. dearth
9. wax
10. anima
List 2
1. acid
2. air
3. tepid
4. lace
5. ire
6. zest
7. docile
8. bend
9. uncoil
10. august
Have fun! And I’d love to get some feedback on the words I’ve chosen, even if you don’t plan to participate.

Oh, wow…you weren’t joking about the word lists! Well at least there’s a lot to choose from
Jan 16, 2012 @ 14:14:42
oy vey….that is quite the list…let me see what i got…surely one of my poems must use at least one of these…
Jan 16, 2012 @ 17:31:30

Jan 16, 2012 @ 17:54:08
Duh, indeed.
… I forgot that your current piece was about drowning/breathing/dying/living. Thank you for linking, Brian.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 15:54:05
hmmmm… what a collection! WIll have to ponder these a bit! thanks for inviting me
HUGS!!!
Jan 16, 2012 @ 15:55:33
I have an offering on the first list. It is somewhat, actually a lot, morbid. But that is what came out. Maybe something cheerful for the second list. A good exercise, thanks.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 16:12:33
Morbid sounds sensational. I’m sure it is fantastic.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 16:29:02
I’m here…I’m reading…already got a poem bleeding (ha! Long live the cheeseball!) Give me thirty and I’ll be back!
Jan 16, 2012 @ 17:29:24
I love cheeseballs … both kinds.
And bleeding. And pus, while we’re talking about nasty stuff.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 17:06:37
Okay…so I took 35..but I’m in! Thanks for this one, lady…I desperately needed to write! Happy Monday!
Jan 16, 2012 @ 17:31:11
I’m so impressed!!! I haven’t even started, nor have I the slightest inkling of a topic. I have one line scribbled somewhere, but I have no clue where it’s headed. I’ll probably find some time later tonight. Hope you check back in tomorrow! Reggie has an idea for a poem, so you’ll have to come back for his anyway.
Happy Monday!
Jan 16, 2012 @ 18:13:38
These are some fantastic words here! I love the word “august.”
Jan 16, 2012 @ 18:21:15
Please write a poem, Anne Katherine. You are so good.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 13:06:11
I did it!
I’ll be back tonight to comment on yours.
I have a prose response as well…I’ll get to that later!
Thanks for the inspiration
Jan 16, 2012 @ 19:56:29
Hey, Shawna… thanks for letting me know about this. I love word challenges.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 20:41:16
I can’t wait to read yours!
Jan 16, 2012 @ 20:19:19
I used the first list, because I’m show-offy like that.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 20:40:33
I’m so glad you jumped in, Shay! I didn’t even send you the link this time because I didn’t think you were interested. What a pleasant surprise.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 20:19:34
Words of incredible challenge; both lists … just make me feel like you’ve thrown down some sort of gauntlet … but that’s today, tomorrow could be a whole ‘nother story …
Jan 16, 2012 @ 20:39:04
Well if you like gauntlets, consider one thrown. If you do not, then gosh, I would never do such a thing. This is all good, clean fun among sweet-spirited poets … albeit morbid thus far.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 20:51:39
Your poems are all so good; I feel entombed by writer’s block.
Jan 16, 2012 @ 22:49:57
lol you got to love it when your own prompt stumps you…i have been there…smiles.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 08:57:46
Well, I have a story and a draft. I was up writing late last night and probably continued thinking about it while I was sleeping. It was definitely better around midnight than it reads at the moment.
We have our homeschool co-op today, so I don’t know if I’ll have it finished (enough) to post and link to dverse this afternoon. I’ll try.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 01:32:21
Thanks fro the reminder . I copied the words to write and forgot about them .. I liked both the lists. but will try for the first one though. I prefer some unusual combinations you make possible.. Keep them bit random always
Will link by tonight
Jan 17, 2012 @ 08:58:39
Anytime this week is fine. I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 10:12:31
Okay, I’m linked … it’s as finished as it’s going to get, for now.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 12:25:11
Me again and still no blog. Don’t know that it’s worth it for one write a week
Anyway, this one is quite simple and blatantly obvious, but I decided to use the prompt for another writing assignment: a lenten devotional our church is producing. Here’s the result using a mixture of both lists:
No dearth of suffering;
You offered up Your body,
becoming frail.
No tepid resolve;
You rebuked temptation–
enemy’s uncoiled tale.
Bend, don’t break;
40 days in wilderness
and damp marsh.
Such august response
To waxed-poetic taunts;
both docile and harsh.
Victory!
Fills the air,
charred not by human weakness.
Test completed!
Zestful LOVE!
Percolates:
Overflowing; Transforming!
Irate enemy has retreated.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 14:45:51
It is awesome!!! I’m so impressed that you wrote something that glorifies God.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 15:22:23
Jan 17, 2012 @ 12:48:09
Oh, didn’t think to title it.
How about “40 Wilderness Days”
Jan 17, 2012 @ 13:11:56
OK, I lied. i did one with the second set, but it was not upbeat. But nobody died.
Jan 17, 2012 @ 21:21:07
Shawna, will do my best to join up soon. I’m a bit in over my head right now. Wonderful prompts. Perhaps I can write something tomorrow when the Internet is doing the protest thing.

Okay – finally pulled something together – not quite what I thought it was going to be but poems go where they want often, don’t they? Where’s A Cop When You Want One? can be found here: http://theblogamist.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/wheres-a-cop-when-you-need-one/
